Industry News and Developments

Over the course of the last 12 months, the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills (MLITSD) had been conducting a material handling campaign, which was running in an effort to help reduce risks associated with the movement of materials in the workplace.

This campaign largely focused on facilities and operations where large and/or bulky materials, articles or things are lifted, carried or moved.

Did you know that Workplace Safety and Prevention Services is a resource that manufacturing and agricultural companies in Ontario can utilize to identify material handling hazards and recommend strategies to reduce risks at no cost? Learn more here.

Health and Safety Tips

When preparing for a work project, it is important to ensure your company has proper safe work practice and safe work procedures in place.

Ontario’s Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) gives employers in Ontario responsibility for many aspects of workplace safety, which you can read about here.

Need clarification on the difference between safe work practices and safe work procedures?

Safe work practices are generally written methods that outline how to perform a task with the minimum risk to people, equipment, materials, environment, and processes.

Gear

The concept of “spring cleaning” can be applied to those who work in the industrial maintenance sector!

With facility shutdowns occurring, and the preparation for a busy summer season, now is the time to do an inventory of your equipment and gear.

Points to consider:

  1. Can we account for each piece of equipment in our inventory?
  2. What is the expiration date on each piece?
  3. What is the level of wear, and is the item still safe for use?
